Did y’all catch Kurt Russell, the dude from Overboard and hardcore libertarian, chit-chatting with The New York Times? He’s got some thoughts on why Hollywood stars should zip it when it comes to politics. These days, lots of celebs are using their fame to shout their political opinions from the rooftops, but Kurt thinks that’s a no-go for actors – they’re supposed to be entertainers, not politicos.
Kurt sees actors as, like, court jesters, right? And when they start yapping about politics, they kinda lose their mojo as entertainers. He’s all, “Stay quiet so peeps can still see you in any character, okay?” He’s got this idea that a court jester’s job is to, you know, poke fun at the king without going too far. It’s been a thing throughout history, and Kurt’s all about keeping it alive in our culture.
Now, Kurt’s got some beef with Hollywood comedians, who he thinks are the new court jesters. He’s giving side-eye to peeps like Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar, who’ve been using their big ol’ platform to get all political. Whoopi wouldn’t even say Trump’s name during his time as prez, and Joy straight-up called him “a domestic terrorist.” Both ladies have been super vocal about their love for Democratic politicians and their dislike for Republicans.
Kurt thinks that when comedians start spilling their political tea, they lose what made ’em awesome in the first place. He’s all, “A court jester should be able to put the king down without getting too personal. It’s been a big deal in history, and we need it in our culture, too.”
Kurt also got asked about his thoughts on the Second Amendment on The View. He thinks the Founding Fathers were onto something when they included it in the Constitution and that it’s super important to us. Whether peeps agree or not with his gun control views, his point about court jesters not doing their job right anymore has got some weight to it.
In a time where peeps are all kinds of polarized politically, Americans miss when funny folks like Don Rickles and Dean Martin roasted celebs and politicians, or when SNL stars like John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd kept their politics on the DL. Maybe actors and comedians should stick to what they’re good at – being entertainers – and let the politicians handle the politics.
