In the face of adversity, an Arizona woman’s undying spirit defied all odds, as she awoke from a coma after being taken off life support. Her incredible story inspires hope, resilience, and the power of love.
45-year-old Lyndee Brown Pellettiere-Swapp was discovered unconscious in her home by her son Steven. She was immediately taken to Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center, where she experienced seizures and eventually slipped into a coma that lasted for 12 days. Despite her family’s unwavering hope, doctors recommended taking Lyndee off life support, as there seemed to be no chance of recovery.
Believing it was in line with Lyndee’s wishes as an organ donor, her family made the heartbreaking decision to remove her life support. Unbeknownst to them, Lyndee could hear every conversation happening around her. She recalled her niece reading to her and doctors discussing her imminent passing.
Lyndee desperately wanted to communicate, but she was unable to do so. She found strength in her husband’s whispered words, as he encouraged her to fight. As doctors prepared to pronounce her dead and an organ donation team stood by, Lyndee miraculously uttered the words, “I’m a fighter,” after her husband had whispered the same in her ear.
Astounded, Steve rushed to get the doctor, and Lyndee’s family rejoiced in the impossible turn of events. Despite her incredible awakening, Lyndee faced a long road to recovery, including relearning how to walk and feed herself. She also underwent numerous surgeries and battled PTSD from the experience.
Nearly two years later, Lyndee still has no answers as to why she fell unconscious or how she managed to recover. However, she firmly believes in the power of connection and encourages others to speak to their loved ones, even if they are unconscious. “Just because you are not conscious does not mean you cannot hear,” she said. “They hear you.”
