I remember one night about a year ago I was sitting on the back porch with a friend I have known for nearly thirty years while he and his wife were visiting for the week. We were talking about how Father’s Day was coming up and that we both had to go by cards for our fathers soon before all the “good” ones were taken.
He then said something to me that made me laugh and think at the same time. He said how it always seemed funny to him that every greeting card company assumes that you have a good relationship with the person that you are getting the card for. That the card companies have this almost idyllic perception of reality that hasn’t been seen since sitcoms in the mid-1950s.
Anyway, it’s something that always is in the back of my mind now when I go to get a card for someone. It almost seems like they picked a theme sixty years ago and decided to stick with it.
Folks that have been in the military, especially ones that have been deployed to combat zones will always look at things from a different angle than everyone else. It’s just one of those things that happens. This means that unfortunately, sometimes the standard lines of the greeting cards that have been around for decades seem a little too fabricated. Guys like me would like something made by someone that knows what we’ve been through, I mean really knows. That way, it feels like it actually applies to us.
Which is why I’m so glad I ran across the Overwatch Greeting Card Company when looking for something to send my nephew who is presently stationed overseas. Greeting cards that have been around in stores for decades have almost this throwaway feel to them, like the person that got it for you literally picked it up after thirty seconds of thought.
The ones that Overwatch produces have an amazing look and feel to them. Added to that, they feel like they know the specific audience they are intended for as opposed to something that could be meant for one of a hundred different groups of people. If you have a veteran in your life, and it seems these days most of us do, please check out Overwatch. They have some amazing cards for pretty much any occasion. Plus, some of them will hit the funny bone in a way only a veteran can truly understand.
