If You Have One Of These Old Phones In A Junk Drawer You May Be…

Replacing mobile phones every one or two years is common practice today.

New products with advanced technology and software updates are released several times a year by different brands. It is no surprise, therefore, those mobile phones tend to be considered outdated after a year or two. At the same time, however, some devices dating back as far as 1984 are now viewed as collector items. If the phones are in good condition, they can be sold at significant prices.

Yes, you read it right, those old smartphones that you may have lying around your house could actually be worth more than you think.

In fact, an unopened first-generation iPhone just sold at auction for $39,000 to the highest bidder, Daily Mail reported. More than 50 times its original price.

It’s a blast from the past. Fifteen years ago, the late Steve Jobs unleashed the iPhone into the world. The company’s first slab phone helped kickstart one of the most prolific tech revolutions the world has ever known. Now, everyone has a smartphone. And, though buttons and bezels have come and gone, most handheld devices owe their pedigree to that very-first iPhone.

The smartphone has since evolved many, many times since that first iteration, of course. Still, it’s amazing to see the pioneer out in the wild.

Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely you’ll get that much for your old gadgets, but research from Protect Your Bubble suggests you can still make a decent profit.

According to the website, the original iPhone model retails for an average of  £542.55 ($617.29) on eBay, while the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X fetches an average price of £1,776.01 ($2020.66).

Here’s a look at the retro handsets that can make you the most money via AWM:

And if you have a Motorola DynaTAC 8000X (above), you might receive an average price of more than $2,035 for the old phone. The DynaTAC 8000X was the world’s first portable mobile phone. And it weighed 1.75 pounds! The phone cost about $3,440 back in 1985. You won’t be able to sell it for its original price but you should be able to get a lot of money for it if it is in good condition. There were only twelve of these types of phones sold within the last year.

Another profitable old phone that you might have sitting around is the HTC Touch Diamond2 (above). The phone was released in 2009 a year after the second-generation iPhone 3G was released. This phone was branded a “personal digital assistant” by Windows and can earn you as much as $622.

A second-generation iPhone (above), the iPhone 3G, takes home an average auction price of about $346, according to data obtained from eBay by Protect Your Bubble.

Other retro phones that can earn you money at auction include:

  • Motorola RAZR2 – which averages a sale price of $274.
  • Motorola Microtac 9800X – which averages a sale price of $263.
  • Motorola International 3200 – which averages a sale price of $247.
  • Nokia 7280 – which averages a sale price of $206.
  • Ericsson T39 – which averages a sale price of $168.

Do you have any valuable old phones sitting in storage at your home? While hoarding doesn’t usually pay well, it might in this case.
