After being made to spend the final eight hours of a flight sitting next to their mother’s body after she passed away unexpectedly in her sleep, two kids were left traumatized.

After 15 years in Hong Kong, Helen Rhodes, 46, her husband Simon, 49, their son, and their daughter were relocating to the UK on Friday. However, Helen was discovered to be unresponsive a few hours into the flight, but despite best efforts, she was unable to be revived.

All of this occurred in front of her two young children, who sat next to their mother while she dozed off in her seat for the remaining eight hours of the flight.

After landing in Germany, as protocol Helen’s body stayed in Frankfurt and the family carried on to the UK without her.

The family is traumatized by the occurrence, but it did provide them the opportunity to speak to Helen, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up to seek money to support Simon and his children.

“We are still in disbelief and shock about the sudden passing of our dearest friend Helen Rhodes, whose life has touched many people in Hong Kong and the UK,” Helen’s friend, Jayne Jeje, wrote on the GoFundMe page.

Jeje remarked that Helen was eager to return to the UK so she could spend time with her parents, whom she hadn’t seen since the COVID-19 outbreak began.

“We are still in disbelief and shock about the sudden passing of our dearest friend Helen Rhodes, whose life has touched many people in Hong Kong and the UK,” Jeje wrote.

“Helen was one of a kind, a gem. She was a midwife by profession, and was always willing to lend a helping hand or advice to anyone who needed it.

“Helen loved to talk and made friends easily. She was the pulse of her community in Tung Chung, in Hong Kong.”

The grief we feel is paralyzing. Yet, we feel lucky to have known her,” Jeje said.
