This story will make you think twice before passing over the “difficult” dog in the pet shelter. Kailey, the dog, was almost euthanized and when this family adopted her they didn’t realize that the dog wasn’t the only one who needed saving. Kailey, a German shepherd mix dog, was just days from being euthanized when a lady stepped in and saved her life. A month later, Kailey saved her owner’s life and the lives of many others who live in the same neighborhood.
The adopted dog was badly abused during her first two years of life. She was rescued and brought to the DeKalb County Animal Services in Decatur, Ga. But no one wanted to adopt her.
Kailey was not able to trust anyone. She was staying with her foster family, Jacqueline Berlin and Keith Santer-Peham, but after a year of being there and not being adopted, it was time to put her to sleep.
“Her one issue was that something has happened to her in in her past so that if you try to touch her and she did not know you she would snap at you. Because of her issue it was really hard to get her adopted,” Jacqueline said about the dog.
Jacqueline was desperate to save this poor dog, so she put a Facebook post on the animal shelter’s page, pleading for someone to find it in their heart to rescue Kailey. And it worked!
Suzy Chandler read the post and it touched her. She immediately applied to adopt Kailey and save her from imminent death.
“The story of what she had been through and it just pulled on our heartstrings, we just thought we would be the perfect people for her,” Suzy shared. “It was a perfect match.”
What Suzy didn’t know is that God would use this dog to save her life in just a few short weeks. Kailey, with her keen sense of smell, would become a hero.
