Just how hot is the world of whiskey auctions right now? Because a rare “forgotten” cask of whisky was recently sold for more than £1 million at auction.
In what many said to be a new world record, a forgotten cask of The Macallan from 1988 just sold bought for £5,000 more than 34 years ago by an absent-minded drinker who paid $6,275 for it, yet never turned up to collect it.
On Sunday, the distiller sold it for 1,295,500 US dollars (£1,017,000) to an unidentified American buyer through the online auction site Whisky Hammer.
Maybe it’s time to forget about real estate or tech stocks: The best investment is in Scotch.
Daniel Milne, Whisky Hammer’s founder, said in a statement:
“When this cask was listed in our auction, we knew it had the potential to make history. To come across a cask of this age, quality and size is extraordinary in itself, enhanced by the fact the liquid was distilled at The Macallan which is reflected in the global attention the cask has attracted.”

Food & Wine noted:
The cask holds about 534 bottles’ worth of whiskey, which works out to $2,426 apiece. That breaks the per-bottle record for a cask, topping a smaller Macallan barrel auctioned in 2021 for $572,000.
Last October, a cask of Macallan 1991 sold at auction for $2.33 million, but the sale included a commissioned NFT from artist Trevor Jones.
