A brazen disregard for safety protocols at a gas station serves as a distressing metaphor for the current state of our nation.
There are a few ground rules at the gas station that often get overlooked. We’re instructed to switch off our engines while filling up, to eliminate the risk of potential accidents. Lighting up a cigarette is a big no-no due to the explosive hazards involved.
Yet, there are those who, like the reckless thrill-seekers they are, decide to leave the engine running or even spark up a cigarette while refueling. These actions are akin to playing Russian Roulette, endangering not only their own lives but also those of every innocent bystander at the station.
You’d think it was a no-brainer – a lit cigarette and volatile fuel don’t mix. Despite this, there are individuals who chuck common sense out of the window and do it anyway. While most people refrain from such foolhardiness, there always seems to be that one person with an irreverent streak, choosing to flout the rules and put everyone else’s lives at risk.
A video that has gone viral, with over 4.3 million views on Rumble, perfectly encapsulates this brazen recklessness. It features a man, stubbornly refusing to snuff out his cigarette while filling his car’s tank with gas, only to be given a stern lesson by a fellow customer who values his life more than a rebellious stance.
The event in question took place in Russia, as per the description on Rumble. “The footage shot at Russia’s Gazprom gas station somewhere in Sofia, Bulgaria, shows the man driving up to the pump and getting out of the vehicle,” reads the account. In a blurry CCTV shot, it is clear that the man is in a heated off-camera argument before a station employee steps up, fire extinguisher in hand, and unceremoniously sprays the smoker in the face.
The Rumble description rounds off with this commentary: “It’s reasonable that this employee at the gas station got all-around miffed when a smoker declined to put out his cigar while pumping gas. As the video of the occurrence appears, it would appear that the orderly made the demand verbally; however, this brother just would not quit smoking. Nor would he, in any event, leave the gas tanks to complete his cigarette. Wow. Yes, he really did just put out that guy’s cigarette with a fire extinguisher! And let’s just say that the internet is loving this gas station vigilante!”

Needless to say, smoking at a gas station is an unequivocally bad idea. Thankfully, the reckless smoker in the video learned his lesson without a disastrous outcome – a face-full of fire extinguisher foam. His misadventure stands as a stark lesson to others: if you value your safety and the safety of others, refrain from lighting up at a gas station or be ready to face the unpleasant consequences.
