Floridians who oppose face mask mandates as a result of the coronavirus pandemic is calling for a million state residents to march on April 10 to “mark that date with a celebration of freedom.”
Protest organizer Chris Nelson posted a message on the Free Florida message board, writing, “You are invited to the Million Maskless March and Mask Burning, Saturday April 10, 2021 at 3pm at the Corner of A1A and Las Olas in Ft Lauderdale!,”. He explained that April 10 “marks one year of mask tyranny in Broward County and we will mark that date with a celebration of freedom!”
He reportedly has “organized viral flash mobs at chain stores that re-popularized Twisted Sister’s protest anthem ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It.’’
The Organizer says the protest has been approved by authorities. He also states that free bottled water and snacks will be provided and encouraged people to bring signs that contain phrases with large letters that say “MASKS ARE SLAVERY,” “NO MORE MASKS,” and “MASKS OFF CHILDREN.” And he stated: “This is a non partisan event but ALL political signs and flags are welcome!”
Following the mask burning we will March north on A1A, make a sharp left at Seabreeze and march back to where we began. The event will be over by 5pm.” Nelson also writes that “April is a very busy time” for Fort Lauderdale Beach and “this is exactly why this location was chosen,” writing, “Jesus said we should not hide our light, but show it to the whole world. Our goal is for people to see us and be inspired to join in!”
Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has been one of the most vocal national critics of lockdown measures and rolled back coronavirus restrictions in his state, including the face mask mandate, back in September in a move that he says has since been vindicated.
“The lockdowns failed to stop the virus but did a great deal of societal damage along the way — damage that a more targeted approach, seeking to reduce total harms, would have been able to avoid (and did, in places like Sweden and Florida),” DeSantis wrote, adding that “policy makers who bucked the elites & challenged the narrative have been proven right to do so.”
While some states are considering the implementation of “vaccine passports,” Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday vowed to take executive action to ban them in Florida and asked the Republican-controlled State Legislature to draft legislation banning the passports.
DeSantis said at a press conference,“We always said we wanted to provide it for all but mandate it for none,”. “And that was something that, while it was advised to take particularly if you’re vulnerable, we were not going to force you to do it.”
He added: “It’s completely unacceptable for either the government or the private sector to impose upon you the requirement that you show proof of vaccine to just simply participate in normal society,”. “You want to go to a movie theater, should you have to show that? No. You want to go to a game, a theme park? No. So we’re not supportive of that.”
Netizens responded to the event, with one writing, “I think it’s time for a serious discussion about quarantining the entire state of Florida. No one goes in and no one comes out for 30 days.” A user tweeted, “Has there ever been a public burning of ANYTHING that people look back on like, “Oh that was a good thing to burn”?”
