In a shocking turn of events, an eleven-year-old boy has become the prime suspect in a Colorado murder case, leaving the community shaken as he awaits trial for the alleged shooting of a 62-year-old woman in a remote woodland cabin.
Police and paramedics responded to reports of a shooting at the cabin on December 19, 2020, and rushed the victim, Karmen Keefauver, to Montrose Memorial Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save her life, and she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility.
Authorities quickly arrived at the scene, located along the 16000-block of Shavano Valley Road, where they discovered that the alleged shooter was an eleven-year-old boy. The young suspect was subsequently taken into custody at Grand Mesa Youth Services, where he remains detained.
Expressing sympathy for the victim’s family, Patrol Lieutenant Cox of the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office stated, “Tragic incidents like these affect us all, especially the Keefauver family, and our deepest condolences go out to the family.” He added that there is no ongoing threat to public safety as there are no other suspects involved in the case.
Homicides are rare in Montrose County, Colorado, with the last incident occurring three years prior in the same remote area. Details regarding the relationship between the young suspect and the victim have not been released, and it remains unclear whether the boy will be tried as an adult.
Readers of the Daily Mail expressed their shock and horror at the tragic event, with one pointing out the role of firearms in such incidents:
“Let’s face it- but for the gun being in the house – this would not have happened. 220 accidental shootings of children this year in the USA. Death by gunshot was the second-highest cause of death in the United States in 2016 among children and adolescents ages 1 to 19.”
Another reader commented on the possible motives for an eleven-year-old to commit such a crime, suggesting that “an 11-year-old child will only kill #1 because they are crazy or #2 because someone is doing horrible things to them.”
