In a shocking incident, a Muslim family was served bacon in sandwiches they ordered from a McDonald’s in Decatur, Georgia. The Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) filed a complaint against the fast-food restaurant for purposely putting pork products in the family’s sandwiches, sparking trouble and forcing the Muslims to eat something that goes against their religious beliefs.
The family, from New York, was visiting Decatur and decided to grab a quick bite at the local McDonald’s. They ordered fourteen sandwiches, specifying that they should not contain bacon or any other pork product. However, upon eating the sandwiches, the family found that they were served bacon, which Muslims are forbidden from eating.
Khaula Hadeed, head of the Alabama chapter of CAIR, said the family was familiar with McDonald’s and had ordered similar items from the menu in New York without any pork product. However, the workers in Georgia schemed to make the Muslims break their religious practice by adding bacon to the sandwiches on purpose. Hadeed believes the incident was an intentional act of religious and ethnic bigotry.
Hadeed called for an investigation into the incident by law enforcement or McDonald’s. One of the family members who consumed the bacon sandwich reportedly threw up twice.
The family was disturbed by the incident, and Hadeed called on McDonald’s to identify and terminate the employees responsible and take proactive steps to satisfy the family’s concerns, starting with an apology.
The incident sparked outrage on social media, with most people siding with the Muslim family.
One reader said, “I don’t know what happened here, but I can believe that someone putting together the sandwiches in a way that they knew would be offensive … I tend to believe the Muslim family and think that some nasty fool stuck bacon into their sandwiches as a way to humiliate and inflict suffering on someone who is ‘other.’ That’s UnAmerican, in my books.”
