The average American family spends around $4,850 dollars on a vacation.
Multiply that number by eight and the total is $38,880. It seems like a lot of money, but that is for almost a decade of annual vacations.
It is also true that a sitting U.S. President, naturally, has a larger footprint than average people. The Secret Service is always along and there is a cost of doing business while away (if, in fact, the President chooses to work rather than play golf on vacation.) It is a bit disturbing to think that taxpayers are paying for Air Force One to fly the President and his family around the world on vacations, but, truthfully, Air Force One costs are only the tip of the iceberg.
Consider these estimated averages:
-The Obama’s annual vacation to Hawaii cost $3.5 million in FLIGHT EXPENSES ALONE
-Michelle and the girls took a ski trip to Aspen, Colorado that cost $222,000
-The family trip to Martha’s Vineyard cost $450,000 in flight expenses.
What about Secret Service costs? In 2015, the Secret Service expenses totaled $1.2 million for the Hawaii trip alone, bringing the year’s vacation total to $4.8 million.
“The Obamas notorious abuse of presidential travel perks wasted military resources and stressed the Secret Service,” Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, said in a statement. “Judicial Watch estimates that the final costs of Obama’s unnecessary vacation and political travel will well exceed $100 million.”
Obama has taken 28 vacations that have spanned 217 days out of his eight years in office. These numbers do not include this year’s Hawaii trip, that should cost, again, around $5 million.
The Obama Administration has tried to defend the costs, saying that the President is from Hawaii, and that fact somehow makes things better.
“Despite the security apparatus that accompanies any president when traveling, the administration works with the United States Secret Service to minimize the disruptions to local residents and businesses,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz said to McClatchy DC. “Honolulu is a place where the president can enjoy some downtime with his family and friends and he’s grateful for the warm hospitality he enjoys when there.”
The grand total over eight years? $96 million and counting.
It is good work, if you can find it.
